The North Carolina Theatre Conference (NCTC) Board of Directors named Lee Street Theatre as the recipient of the 2013 Community Theatre Award. The NCTC cited the theatre's successful execution of a $1.5 million capital campaign, extraordinary artistic quality and inclusion of other theatre groups in their space as the reason for bestowing this worthy honor on the theatre.
2008 Catawba College alumnus Justin Dionne serves as Managing Artistic Director and has focused significant time and effort in leading the theatre to be a critical part of the revitalization of downtown Salisbury.
"With Dionne's strong leadership, and support from the Board of Directors, it's no surprise that Lee Street theatre is receiving this honor in their sixth year of existence," says Angie Hays, NCTC Executive Director.
About Lee Street Theatre
The Lee Street Theatre & Performing Arts Center at the Tom & Martha Smith Event Center is located at the corner of North Lee and Kerr streets. It was founded in 2008 and undertook at $1.5 million capital campaign (which is still ongoing) to help underwrite the cost of renovating its new home. In the new facility, flexible seating will be available for anywhere from 130-200 people. The Center was funded by and named for 1964 Catawba alumnus Tom Smith and his wife. About the Awards
Each year, the NCTC Board of Directors presents the NCTC Awards to companies, schools, and individuals that have exhibited leadership roles in their community, as well as artistic, professional, or educational excellence. The Board of Directors is a group of statewide volunteers who represent the theatre community and serve on behalf of some of the state's most prominent organizations and schools. Board members and NCTC staff will travel to each recipient's theatre or school to make award presentations atEvents in the winter and spring.
