Dr. Cynthia Osterhus, an assistant professor of teacher education at Catawba College, recently made a presentation to the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCCTM) Conference in Greensboro. Her presentation was entitled, “Integrating Technology into Mathematics Methods Courses.”
Catawba College 2005 teacher education graduate, Katie Moore, introduced Osterhus at the conference which was also attended by 16 Catawba College teacher education students.
Dr. Sharon Sullivan, assistant professor of mathematics at Catawba, also made a presentation at the NCCTM Conference. Her presentation was entitled, “Cultural Mathematics: An Interdisciplinary Approach.”
Osterhus joined the faculty of Catawba in 2003 and works with pre-service teacher education in math and science. She also serves as coordinator of the mathematics education program. Prior to that, she worked as a teacher-educator in the sciences and mathematics for 30 years in the Rowan-Salisbury School System. She served 13 years as coordinator for that system’s K-8 science program, and 17 years as a middle and high school mathematics teacher. Additionally, she served as director of professional development for 10 years in that same school system.
Sullivan, who joined the faculty of Catawba in 2001, earned her bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., her master’s degree in mathematics at the University of Vermont in Burlington, and her doctorate in mathematics at the University of Kentucky in Lexington.
