Catawba College is one of 16 colleges and universities nationwide recognized by University Business magazine's Models of Efficiency program, which is sponsored by Higher One, a technology and payment services company serving higher education. The Models of Efficiency program recognizes innovative approaches for streamlining higher education operations through technology or business process improvements.

"Efficient business operations translate into better experiences for students and administrators alike, and the Models of Efficiency program aims to encourage schools to prioritize service," said Tim Goral, editor-in-chief of University Business. "Catawba College stands out for developing effective solutions to challenging situations."

Two of the school's offices, Office of Financial Aid and the Registrar's Office, were honored for transforming time-consuming tasks into smooth, money-saving operations. The financial aid staff switched from a paper time card system to an electronic method to log student work-study hours. It also enables students to track hours themselves, dramatically reducing help calls to staffers and making it easier for staff to seamlessly share data with human resources.

The Registrar's Office employed a new online registration process that was more convenient for students and advisors, who can now register 24/7. It allows users to share information and check for updates and changes. The process also freed advisors to focus on students who needed help most and saved more than 5,000 pages of paper.

In addition to Catawba College, honorees include George Mason University, Virginia; George Washington University, Washington, D.C.; Houston Community College, Texas; Lakeland Community College, Ohio; Mercer University, Georgia; Northwest Arkansas Community College; Ogeechee Technical College, Georgia; Salisbury University, Maryland; Texas A&M University, College Station; Texas A&M International University, Laredo; University of Central Oklahoma; University of Virginia; Victor Valley College, California; Wake Technical Community College, North Carolina; and Wilkes University, Pennsylvania.

Models of Efficiency is an ongoing recognition program. Schools can participate in upcoming rounds by visiting www.universitybusiness.com/moe.

The program is sponsored by Higher One, a technology and payment services company solely focused on higher education. Founded in 2000 on a college campus, Higher One serves college and universities by helping business offices eliminate unnecessary costs while providing all students with the choice of easier access to refunds, innovative banking services, and the basics of financial management.

"It's a very rewarding experience to partner with University Business in recognizing operations efficiencies on campuses across the country," said Dean Hatton, CEO of Higher One, the program's sponsor. "The creativity, tenacity, and determination demonstrated by "Models of Efficiency" winners are inspiring to us in the private sector as we continue to strive to support the streamlining of operations and services in higher education business offices."
