Sustainable CatawbaSeveral Green Pig Initiatives will be happening on campus this week (the week of 9/28/09) to heighten awareness of the fact that there is a statewide ban on the acceptance of plastic bottles at landfills.
;First the news…..
As of October 1, plastic bottles, oil filters and wooden pallets are a no-go at N.C. landfills. These items will have to be recycled and cannot be included in regular household or bagged garbage. The spirit of the ban, state officials say, is to make people make a better effort to recycle. Penalties will be levied against individuals and businesses for non-compliance with the disposal bans.
Now to the Green Pig Initiatives…..
To heighten awareness of the ban and to encourage either recycling of or non-use of plastic bottles, several areas of the College have activities planned.
On Monday, Sept. 28, between 5:00 and 8:30 p.m., students enrolled in the School of Evening and Graduate Studies can put their names in a hat for a drawing to win one of three Brita water pitchers. These pitchers filter out and reduce chlorine and sediment, eliminate 99% of lead, reduce copper, mercury and cadmium in normal tap water and could easily eliminate an individual's need for a plastic bottle of water SEGS students should drop by the second floor lobby of the Ketner Building to participate in this drawing.
Then between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 30, folks from Catawba's Waste Reduction and Recycling Office will have a table set up in the lobby of the Cannon Student Center and students enrolled in the day program can put their names in a hat for a drawing to win one of four Brita water pitchers.
Finally, at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 1, the student organization, E.C.O. ( Environment Catawba Outreach), will commemorate the plastic bottle ban with Bottle Bowling on Stanback Plaza, outside of the Cannon Student Center. Members of the campus community are invited to see how many bottles they can "strike" out, with prizes for everyone! If rain, this activity will be rescheduled.
