Catawba Sport Management students traveled to Durham to visit Duke University and its famed basketball facility, Cameron Indoor Stadium. These students, all enrolled in a “History of Sport” class toured the Duke University Basketball Museum and Sports Hall of Fame.
Catawba Associate Professor of Sport Management Duane Aagaard shared, “We are located in a rich basketball region with Duke University less than two hours from our campus, what better way to engage in the history of intercollegiate athletics than to experience it first-hand.”

Duke University Athletics is best known for Coach Krzyzewski and the success of the Men’s Basketball program which has captured five national championships, most recently in 2015. However, the experience was far more than basketball as exhibits displayed national championship and Hall of Fame inductees across Duke Athletics.
One particular display caught the students’ attention. Senior Bobby Cardelle noticed that during Duke’s Men Soccer National Championship campaign in 1986 the Blue Devils took a loss on September 6th to Catawba College.

Cardelle shared, “It was really cool to see Catawba College on Duke’s schedule, even more amazing to see that it was a 2-1 win.”
The interactive museum featured trophies, memorabilia, videos, and plenty of historical accounts of Duke Athletics’ success. Catawba student Phillip Hollenhorst said, “I had a great experience at the Duke Hall of Fame because it showed the rich and impressive history of the athletic programs of the Blue Devils.”
Students also learned that following the attack on Pearl Harbor in December of 1941 the U.S. Government prohibited large gatherings on the West Coast. Therefore, the January 1, 1942 Rose Bowl was played at Duke Stadium. It marked the only time in history that the game has been played outside of Pasadena, California.
