There were many Santas this year in Rowan County who were, literally, Santa to a Senior. As Home Instead Senior Care "wrapped up" the third annual community outreach, "Be a Santa to a Senior," more seniors than ever had a gift under the tree.
"We had over 200 names of seniors who may not have had any Christmas gifts this year and many with no family here," said Robin Perry, director of Community Service with Home Instead. "The community really stepped up, despite the tough economy, and came through for these seniors who are in need."
Ornaments with the wishes of the seniors were on Christmas trees in the local Walgreens stores. Folks took them, bought the items and then returned them to the store. Gifts were picked up and taken to a big wrapping party held in the fellowship hall of First Baptist Church in Salisbury.
Volunteers, including the Catawba College women's basketball team, converged on the fellowship hall and got more than 200 gifts wrapped and ready to deliver.
