Catawba College is proud to announce that Abigail Hartsoe Harnois, a 2023 graduate with a major in Mathematics and a minor in Secondary Education, has been named the Beginning Teacher of the Year by Salisbury Rowan Schools at East Rowan High School.

“As a second-year teacher, I have learned that building strong relationships with my students is as vital as the content I cover daily,” said Harnois. “Each interaction is an opportunity to inspire and motivate, and witnessing their growth and achievements reinforces my commitment to creating a supportive and engaging learning environment. Every day, I embrace each moment as a learning experience, and it not only enhances my teaching practice but also empowers my students to face their challenges with resilience and confidence. I understand that every challenge is a stepping stone towards growth - for both my students and me."

Dr. Larry Cartner, Catawba’s Director of Residency Licensure, added, “In keeping with Catawba’s tradition of reflective practice grounded in a strong, content-rich curriculum, Abigail was selected as the Beginning Teacher of the Year for East Rowan High School. In addition to this recognition, Abigail was selected as one of the district's only four Beginning Teachers of the Year. Currently enrolled as a Residency Licensure candidate, Abigail was also the only high school teacher selected among the district Teachers of the Year.”
