Nicholas Fuqua
Visiting Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre
Nicholas Fuqua is currently the Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre at Catawba College, where he is looking forward to his role as music director for the theatre department, voice instruction and string instruction. Prior to his appointment, he served as theatre director and auditorium manager for Clarksville High School. Before that he spent seven years in the JCPS school district in Louisville, Kentucky, ending as the Fine Arts Facilitator and Performing Arts Department Chair for Fern Creek High School. Prior to his move he was a catholic cantor, music director for Art and Sol youth theatre and champion of the arts at Mesa Arts Academy Charter School, in Mesa, AZ.
Nicholas earned his M.M. (Master of Music) in musical theatre and opera performance from Arizona State University in 2012. Afterward, he went on to earn his M.Ed. (Master of Education) from University of Louisville, located in Kentucky. During the pandemic Nicholas began his final academic journey and started his M.F.A (Master of Fine Arts) in Theatre Directing and Pedagogy, which he anticipates earning in the spring of 2023. A native of Flint, MI. Nicholas earned his B.A. in musical theatre with a minor in viola performance from Siena Heights University located in Adrian, MI.
After his initial graduate degree from Arizona State University, Nicholas went on to compete in the first National Musical Theatre Competition. Out of a national search, Nicholas placed as a semi-finalist in the top 16. Afterward, he went to Canada and landed the leading role in two operas that were making their Canadian premier with the Halifax Opera of Nova Scotia. For his leading role in Thyrsis and Amaranth, Nicholas was hailed by Opera Canada as a “terrific countertenor,” and for his leading role in The Harpies he was complimented on being “a pleasant tenor.” Nicholas spent multiple years working with Kentucky Opera.
Nicholas received his Actors Equity Card (AEA) in 2014 after two successful summers of performance at the professional Barn Theatre, shows including: 42nd Street, Shrek, Fiddler on the Roof and culminating with roles in Hair! and Hello, Dolly! For his role in Hair! Nicholas received reviews for his stand out performance, and previously was given glowing reviews for his portrayal of Tootles in Peter Pan! Nicholas is also a proud member of the American Guild of Musical Artists.
