Campus Tree Care Committee

Our commitment to a healthy tree population and diverse campus forest at Catawba College can help many species not only by providing more habitat, but also by contributing to CO2 reduction, creating beautiful, shaded oases for our campus community, shading buildings to help reduce energy usage, and much more.

Service-Learning Opportunities

Service-Learning Opportunities

The College will support student groups to engage in service-learning opportunities that the Landscape and Grounds department sponsors.

The College will strive to have at least one annual Campus Clean-Up.

The College will honor Arbor Day annually with special events such as a Tree Identification Walk, tree plantings, honoring good stewards of the environment, and an “oldest tree” search.  These days will be recorded with pictures and program of activities of that day on the College’s website.

Committee Members

Jeff Hartley, Class of ‘02 – Director of Landscape and Grounds, Facilities Department

“Serving on the Campus Tree Care Advisory Committee and establishing a Tree Care Plan furthers Catawba College’s commitment to sustainability, continues to ‘green’ the campus, and helps combat our greenhouse gas emissions. Our commitment to a healthy tree population reduces the amount of energy the campus uses, reduces carbon dioxide, and provides a comfortable setting for students, faculty, staff, and visitors to enjoy.”

Jay Bolin – Associate Professor of Biology / Dean of Natural Sciences, Natural Science Department

“I’m excited to serve on Catawba’s Campus Tree Care Advisory Committee, because as a botanist and nature lover, I love trees. I want to contribute towards keeping our campus beautiful by keeping our existing mature trees healthy and ensuring that we continually have diverse and interesting new trees being planted for my botany students to puzzle over and learn from.”

Cathy Green – Director of Operations, Center for the Environment

“I have always been amazed by the beauty of trees and their importance in the ecosystem of this world. Their benefits, too vast to list in a single sentence, are something we need to protect. The Tree Care Advisory Committee will work to do that on Campus, and I’m grateful to be a part of the effort.”

Hannah Addair, Class of ‘18 – Sustainability Specialist, Center for the Environment

"Serving on the Campus Tree Care Advisory Committee is important to me because I believe that we can make a positive change to our Campus's tree canopy and biodiversity. Not only does a diverse campus forest help many species by providing more habitat, but it also contributes to CO2 reduction, creates beautiful, shaded oases for our campus community, shades buildings to help reduce energy usage, and much more! I am proud to serve on a committee that recognizes the importance and works towards the protection of these friendly green giants."

Madison Jaynes, Class of ‘24 – Student

“I am proud to be a student representative on the Campus Tree Care Advisory Committee because of the important role it plays in keeping our campus beautiful. Without proper planning and care, our green spaces would not be functional and enjoyable. By protecting and promoting tree biodiversity we are creating an exceptional environment for Catawba community members now and for generations to come.”

Katie Willingham, Class of ‘25 – Student

“I joined the Campus Tree Care Advisory Committee after learning about the complex nature of plant life in Dr. Bolin's Field Botany course. Having a flourishing canopy of diverse trees provides a plethora of ecosystem services and a beautiful environment that contributes to a happy and healthy campus.”
