Dr. Carlton joined the School of Health Science and Human Performance in 2019. He teaches courses for the undergraduate Sport Management major and the Master of Sport Management program. He holds an undergraduate degree in Sport Management from Elon University, an MBA from California Lutheran University, an M.S. from NC State University, and a PhD in Parks, Recreation, & Sport Management from NC State University.  Specifically, Dr. Carlton specializes in Sport Law and Sport Marketing. He has served as the President of the North Carolina Sport Management Association (2022-2024), Director of the Rowan County Special Olympics (2020-Present), and is the current Faculty Athletics Representative for Catawba Athletics (2022-Present).  He has multiple publications from his research on youth sport and physical activity.  Additionally, he has co-authored several book chapters in the Encyclopedia of Sport Management on the community and youth sport sector.  Dr. Carlton’s teaching philosophy leans heavily on experiential learning.  Every Fall, he helps students prepare and then compete in the National Collegiate Sports Sales Championship where students are tasked with selling ticket packages to potential clients. He regularly co-leads the graduate domestic and international travel courses (e.g., Washington D.C., Las Vegas, and London UK to name a few).  Dr. Carlton leads a student group to the Applied Sport Management Association conference every Spring to compete in the case study competition and present their master’s-level research. Every March, he takes a group of students to Greensboro, NC to volunteer at the ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament.
