Urinetown

In the not-so-distant future, a terrible water shortage and 20-year drought has led to a government ban on private toilets and a proliferation of paid public toilets, owned and operated by a single megalomaniac company: the Urine Good Company. If the poor don’t obey the strict laws prohibiting free urination, they’ll be sent to the dreaded and mysterious “Urinetown.” After too long under the heel of the malevolent Caldwell B. Cladwell, the poor stage a revolt, led by a brave young hero, fighting tooth and nail for the freedom to pee “wherever you like, whenever you like, for as long as you like, and with whomever you like.” A brilliant satire modeled off the plays of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht, Urinetown is a wickedly funny, fast-paced, and surprisingly intelligent comedic romp.

From the Director

When Urinetown premiered over twenty years ago, audiences laughed at its absurd premise — a city so drought-stricken that people must pay to pee. Yet beneath the satire and self-aware humor lies a biting reflection of human nature, power, and privilege. Two decades later, the show feels less like parody and more like prophecy.

We live in a world still wrestling with the same questions: Who controls our most basic needs? What happens when resources run dry, when corporations profit from desperation, and when those in power justify injustice “for the greater good”? The brilliance of Urinetown is that it tackles these heavy truths through outrageous comedy, daring us to laugh even as we recognize ourselves in the chaos.

In today’s political climate—where environmental crises, social inequality, and the commodification of essentials remain front-page news—Urinetown reminds us that satire isn’t just entertainment; it’s a mirror. And if we’re laughing, perhaps it’s because the truth hits a little too close to home.

So, welcome to Urinetown—a place that’s equal parts ridiculous and real. Hold onto your tickets… and maybe your bladders. Love Fuqua! Enjoy the Show.
