Free, Online Course
Emerging Young Leaders are group of male African American or Black students with a shared desire to learn and experience higher education. Students will be enrolled in a college-level course focused on exploring leadership while receiving instruction in academic skills crucial for success at the college-level. In addition, scholars will be paired with male African American or Black mentors from Catawba College who will meet regularly with students and offer advice on college life.
Spring 2022 Course Information
- Change Makers: Building Leaders for the Future provides a 21st century perspective on leadership, designed to help students adapt to the social and emotional challenges of their environment and beyond. As a Change Maker, this course will take you on a journey of learning to lead yourself, inspire action to lead others, and equip you with skills to overcome racial and social challenges as you step forward with a new perspective on leading your generation.
- Time: Now an online course with on-campus mentoring opportunities from freshman and sophomore students at Catawba College (our iBelong Male Mentors) as well as special dinners, events, and speakers from the Catawba Black Alumni Network (CBAN).

Selection Process
To be eligible, young African American or Black men must:
- Attend a public high school within Rowan County, North Carolina
- Be currently enrolled in their junior year of high school
- Have demonstrated above-average scholastic achievement
- Have interest in pursuing higher education
- Provide a copy of a high school transcript
- Submit a letter of recommendation from a school counselor or teacher
Such students are encouraged to apply below. The deadline to apply is January 4. The application will remain available through January 4 on a space available basis.
Cost
All tuition, fees, and books are covered. Students will be expected to provide their own transportation to and from class.
