General Studies
Broaden Your Horizon Through Enhanced Flexibility
The General Studies program at Catawba College provides wide exposure to the liberal arts foundation, going both deeper and broader than general education requirements. It provides students with more flexibility with their field of study and career path, plus the flexibility to work toward a degree while also working full-time.
Rather than focusing on one specific course of study, General Studies majors gain a breadth of knowledge across multiple disciplines and explore specific areas of personal interest to them. You will take an interdisciplinary approach across several areas of study including the Humanities, Fine Arts, Math, Natural Sciences, and Social/Behavioral Sciences giving you greater depth in more areas than in a traditional degree program.
In this self-directed major, students consult with faculty advisors to design a program that provides a well-rounded field of study, gaining them a broad range of knowledge atypical of traditional majors, while also arming them with a bachelor’s degree upon program completion - a minimum qualification for most professional job-seekers these days.
The typical student majoring in another degree program has a focused study of 45-60 hours in a relatively narrow topic. The General Studies degree at Catawba College spreads those 45-60 hours across at least five areas, therefore the student has greater depth in more areas than would be expected of someone in a traditional degree program.
