Three students in the Catawba College Biology Program have been awarded North Carolina Academy of Sciences (NCAS) Yarbrough awards for the 2019-2020 academic year.

The state-wide grant offers opportunities for research, and the Catawba students received two of the four grants awarded.

Austin Snide received the grant for his research, "Eggshell Organizing Factor 1 Protein in Psorophora ferox Mosquitoes," working with advisor Dr. Carmony L. Hartwig, Associate Professor of Biology.

Also receiving the grant were Jasmine Wiitala and Cheyenne Smith, who partnered for the project, "Investigating the Antimicrobial Properties of Local Versus Non-Local Honey on Human Microbiota." Their grant was sponsored by advisor Dr. Steven Coggin, Professor Emeritus of Biology.

These student researchers began work on their projects in August with Hartwig and plan to present their findings at several local, regional and national scientific conferences, including NCAS, American Chemical Society (ACS) and the Association of Southeastern Biologists (ASB) in Spring 2020.

The Yarbrough Research Grants program supports undergraduate research by providing grants to students who submit grant proposals judged meritorious of support.
