Catawba College is one of the most environmentally responsible colleges in the U.S.A. and Canada, according to The Princeton Review (www.PrincetonReview.com).

The Salisbury, North Carolina-based college was one of 322 schools included in the third annual edition of "The Princeton Review's Guide to 322 Green Colleges: 2012 Edition."   Catawba joins 10 other North Carolina colleges and universities included in this free, downloadable book, published in partnership with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The book is a comprehensive guide that focuses solely on colleges that have demonstrated a notable commitment to sustainability.

Catawba College and the University of North Carolina at Asheville are new additions from North Carolina this year.   They join other North Carolina institutions cited as Green Colleges, including Appalachian State University, Duke University, Elon University, Guilford College, North Carolina State University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Wake Forest University, Warren Wilson College and Western Carolina University.

The guide was released April 17, in advance of the April 22 celebration of Earth Day. Catawba's profile in the guide and downloadable version of the full guide can be accessed at   www.princetonreview.com/green-guide and on the website of the USGBC's Center for Green Schools at www.centerforgreenschools.org/greenguide

The 322 schools included in this guide were based on the "Green Rating” scores tallied for them in 2011 and reported in profiles of these schools published in summer 2011 on the Princeton Review website and in some of that company's print edition college guides.   The Green Rating is a numerical score from 60 – 99 that is based on data from a 50-question survey conducted among hundreds of school administrators about their school's environmental and sustainability-related commitments and initiatives.

Of 768 schools for which Green Rating scores were tallied in 2011, the 322 schools in this guide received scores of 83 or higher.   Note: The Princeton Review does not rank the schools in this guide hierarchically (1 to 322) according to their Green Rating scores, or report those scores in the profiles in this guide. A school's Green Rating can be found in that school's full profile on the  website at www.princetonreview.com (after accessing a school's profile, click on words "Campus Life / Facilities" on the left-hand sidebar).
