Last year, students in Dr. Christina Azmy’s 2020 First-Year Seminar (FYS), “Navigating the Maze,” applied their newly acquired decision-making skills to purchase items for a charitable goody bag.

Every first-year students selects a seminar to help with a smooth transition from high school to college. The seminars introduce new students to the academic values of the Catawba College community and facilitates the development of strong bonds among students and between students and faculty. While different topics are featured, each section emphasizes the development of critical reading and writing skills.

Each student in Azmy’s seminar was assigned an age-range and gender to consider when making their purchases, as well as a budget to maximize.

Some students returned a year later to assemble the goody bags which will be donated to a local charity.
