Catawba College senior Nathaniel Griffin of Boomer, N.C., has been selected to receive the American Chemical Society's (ACS) 2010 Student Leadership Award. The award will be presented to Griffin at the 2010 ACS Leadership Institute to be held in Fort Worth, Texas, January 22-24.
The award is made in recognition of emerging leaders in the ACS student chapter network and helps them prepare for leadership opportunities at volunteer organizations, such as ACS, and in their professional career.
Griffin, who is pursuing a double major in chemistry and biology, was also recently awarded an Undergraduate Biotechnology Research Fellowship by the N.C. Biotechnology Center. This fellowship allows him to work during the 2009-2010 academic year with a research associate in the laboratory of Steven Zeisel at the UNC Chapel Hill unit on the N.C. Research Campus in Kannapolis. Griffin is working on a project entitled "DHA and Brain Development in Fetal Mice" and is mentored by Dr. Alyssa Gulledge.
Additionally, this past summer, Griffin was one of two Catawba College students who studied at the FBI Laboratory on the grounds of the FBI Academy on the Quantico Marine Corps Base in Virginia under the Visiting Scientist Program. Griffin and Joe Manser of Mooresville, a chemistry major, accompanied Catawba College chemistry professor, Dr. Mark Sabo, who has been involved with this program for the past several years.
