Catawba College senior Hayley Stafford of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., who is majoring in Environmental Science, received a Grant-in-Aid of Research award from the national honors society, Sigma-Xi, for her proposal, "Effects of increased levels of CO₂ on calcification in cnidarians."

Working with Catawba College Assistant Professor of Biology Dr. Connie Lowery, Hayley will manipulate the levels of CO₂ gas in the atmosphere within a chamber and measure its effects on skeleton construction in a small hydroid. This study will provide insight into the effects of global climate change on calcification during the early development of reef-building coral.
