Catawba College senior Hayley Stafford of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., who is majoring in Environmental Science, received a Grant-in-Aid of Research award from the national honors society, Sigma-Xi, for her proposal, "Effects of increased levels of CO2 on calcification in cnidarians."

Working with Catawba College Assistant Professor of Biology Dr. Connie Lowery, Hayley will manipulate the levels of CO2 gas in the atmosphere within a chamber and measure its effects on skeleton construction in a small hydroid. This study will provide insight into the effects of global climate change on calcification during the early development of reef-building coral.

Sigma-Xi offers grants to undergraduate and graduate students.
