Stacey Elaine Michael of Lexington, N.C., a senior attending Catawba College in Salisbury and majoring in middle school education, was one of three area students who received scholarship awarded through the Independent College Fund of North Carolina on behalf of Charlotte-based Clariant Corporation.

Miss Michael and the other scholarship recipients were each awarded a $2,000 scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year.   All of these scholarship recipients are students planning for careers teaching math or science. Clariant Corporation is one of the world's leading makers of specialty chemicals.

For 25 years, Clariant has partnered with the Fund to provide critical scholarship support to students attending North Carolina's independent colleges and universities. Recognizing that math and science skills are increasingly important in the workplace and knowing the State's ongoing demand for teachers, Clariant first funded designated scholarship support to students in 2003 with the Clariant Corporation Prospective Teacher Scholarship. The recent contribution marks the fifth year of this scholarship program.

Through a competitive application process, in addition to Miss Michael the other two recipients of the Clariant Corporation Prospective Teacher Scholarships are:

    ;
  • Candice Marie Marlin of Salisbury, N.C., a senior attending Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, majoring in mathematics and secondary education, and
  • ;
  • Katie Lynn Hatley of Stanfield, N.C., a senior attending Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, majoring in mathematics with a minor in education.

Connie Knight, Director of Communications & Public Affairs for Clariant, said, "As a chemistry company, it is essential that we be able to tap into a pool of highly qualified prospective workers. The role of North Carolina's teachers to inspire students to excel at science and math and to pursue scientific and analytical occupations benefits companies like Clariant and that's why we initiated these scholarships."

Hope Williams, President of the Independent College Fund of North Carolina, expressed the Independent College Fund's appreciation to Clariant Corporation for providing opportunities and access to higher education for prospective teachers. "With the continued increase in North Carolina's K-12 student population, the State needs 10,000 new teachers each year, especially those certified to teach math and science. Companies in North Carolina and across the U.S. also seek to employ individuals who have the math and science skill sets that will facilitate growth and encourage competition in the global economy. We applaud Clariant's commitment to helping North Carolina meet these needs."

The Independent College Fund of North Carolina was founded in 1953 to provide North Carolina businesses an opportunity to support the state's private colleges and universities. Since its founding, the Independent College Fund has exemplified business and education in partnership by helping thousands of students to prepare for careers in business, the professions, and public service. The Fund has raised more than $57 million for the benefit of its 26 member colleges and universities and their students.
