Members of the Catawba College student organization, ECO (Environment Catawba Outreach) were presented with a rare opportunity on Friday, November 13th. Restoring Eden, a faith-based environmental group, invited ECO to Washington D.C., to speak with North Carolina's senators.
Although Congress was in recess, but the students were able to meet with an aide from both Senator Richard Burr's and Senator Kay Hagan's offices. ECO members reminded the aides that students have a voice that needs to be heard too. They asked questions and received informative answers from both offices.
"I was really impressed that both offices took the time to talk with us about environmental issues we feel need to be addressed by our political leaders," says sophomore Jennifer Goble of Salisbury, a biology and environmental science major.
ECO club members making the trip included Jacob Snyder of Eden, N.C.; Jonathan Cooley of Mooresville, N.C.; Sarah Robinson of Cartersville, Va.; Jennifer Goble; Sarah Moore of Mocksville, N.C.; Julie Gilley of Dobson, N.C.; Jessica Bound of Waxhaw, N.C.; and Kendra Joyner of Petersburg, Va.
ECO is the campus environment club. ECO strives to educate and encourage the Catawba community and the local region to be good stewards of our planet by promoting environmentally sound habits and techniques. ECO works closely with the Center for the Environment and other clubs on campus to raise environmental awareness and planEvents and community service opportunities. Membership is open to all students.
Club officers are Sarah Robinson, president; Jessica Bound, vice president; Sarah Moore, secretary; and Josh Owens, treasurer. Dr. Sue Calcagni serves as faculty advisor for the organization.
