The Center for the Environment at Catawba College is now accepting applications for its third annual National Environmental Summit for High School Students, scheduled for July 9-13.

The summit, "Redesigning Our Future," is open to high school students from across the country who will be sophomores, juniors or seniors during the 2013-2014 academic year. A limited amount of financial aid is also available.

The experience, intended to help students explore how they can use their interests and talents to make a difference in the world, is a partnership of the Center for the Environment and Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) of Colorado. With the guidance of Catawba professors, Center staff and RMI scientists and engineers, students discover how their interest in diverse areas – everything from writing to chemistry, from history to biology, from philosophy to theater – can be used to address today's environmental challenges.

"So many people don't realize they can make a difference or they don't discover it until later in life," says John Wear, executive director of the Center for the Environment. "But they can. They can change the path of others. That's the message we offer these students."

Summit leaders employ a solutions-based approach to environmental challenges. Students learn about the importance of collaboration, whole systems thinking and effective communication in advancing a cause.

One student at last year's summit noted that she felt as if she had "grown a lifetime away" from where she started when she first arrived on the Catawba campus. "I was given the push to truly take a step in the direction of helping to save this earth," she said. "I was given the tools to be an awesome leader and bring us to a greener world."
