Catawba College stepped onto the environmental friendly bandwagon with its Green Pig Initiative in the 2009-2010 school year. This academic year, the college traveled even further in its efforts to preserve the environment by implementing recyclable takeout boxes in the dining hall for use by all members of the college community.

Many on campus seem to be benefiting from these boxes, as are the local landfills in the Rowan-Salisbury area.

"I do like that the boxes are compartmentalized and all the food is separated and doesn't get all over each other. It is another step in the right direction for Catawba going green," comments junior musical theatre major Autumn Hamilton of Conyers, Ga.

So how did these boxes come into play within the everyday lives of members of the Catawba community?

"Students have been talking about having different takeout boxes since 2007," explains Student Government Association President Kendra Joyner. She elaborated on how the former Dean of Students, Dan Sullivan, came to her last spring once she was elected president with hopes of getting eco-friendly to-go boxes funded by the SGA for the dining hall. SGA agreed to the idea and took on funding for the boxes. So far, they have proven to be a success and easy to use. Sustainable Catawba

If someone wants to use a box, they simply have to walk down to the dining hall and notify the dining hall employee who is running the computer. That employee will then swipe the individual's college card and record that they are going to use a takeout box. This will show that an individual is accountable for a takeout box. One can keep the box as long as they want to. However, if they want to use another takeout box, they must return the box used previously before they can check out an additional one. Boxes must be turned in by the end of the year to the dining hall or the student will be charged a $5 fine. Sustainable Catawba
