From folk songs to rap, many artists have championed the rights of the oppressed through their music, representing the countless voices of silenced populations. On Saturday, November 20 at 7:30 p.m. in Hedrick Little Theatre on the Catawba College campus, three of the contemporary popular music ensembles and the Sounds of Silence honors class at Catawba will band together for a concert dedicated to music that has historically served as a voice for oppressed populations and has served as an engine of social change.
The show will feature several of the Catawba Vernaculars ensembles, including Urb'N Soul, The Air Apparents and La Femme, a special all-female group put together for the show. The concert will evolve around three social themes including racial and ethnic inequality, gender inequality, and political/war themes. Selected songs will range from classics such as Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come," Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Fortunate Son," and Helen Reddy's "I Am Woman," to contemporary hits such as "Survivor" by Destiny's Child and John Legend's "Wake Up Everybody."
Additionally, multi-media presentations, created by students in the Sounds of Silence honors class, will accompany the music performed at the concert. Students also designed posters, demonstrating important connections between the music and social themes, which can be viewed throughout the evening in Peeler Crystal Lounge.
Admission is free with the donation of a new or gently used coat and/or gloves that will be given to Rowan Helping Ministries.
