Follow the Yellow Brick Road to Catawba.

From the Director

A few years ago, one of the original pairs of ruby slippers from the 1939 film was recovered after being missing for more than a decade. The story made national headlines. Not simply because the shoes were valuable, but because they represent something enduring. They are an emblem of belief. Of hope. Of the quiet insistence that we possess more power than we realize.

When I’m asked to direct a show, I begin with one question: Why this story now, for this audience?

My first encounter with The Wizard of Oz was on a small black-and-white television in the mid-1960s. The image flickered. The signal drifted. And yet Oz was still wonderful. Even without color, the world felt expansive. The characters felt larger than life. The journey felt urgent and real. That early experience taught me something about theatre long before I had language for it: spectacle matters, but story and character matter more. Wonder is not dependent on technology. It is dependent on imagination.

L. Frank Baum created a vibrant symbolic landscape, but he anchored it in a child’s perspective. Though intended for young audiences, the story resonates deeply with adults because it understands how small we can feel in the face of uncertainty. It understands isolation and fear. And yet Dorothy does not walk the yellow brick road alone.

She gathers companions who believe themselves deficient: a Scarecrow who doubts his intelligence, a Tin Man who fears he cannot feel, a Lion convinced he lacks courage. Each already possesses the very quality he seeks, but it takes friendship, affirmation, and shared trial to reveal it.

In a culture that often turns first to screens rather than to one another, this story feels newly urgent. Oz can be distorted, dazzling, even frightening. But it is navigable when traveled together.

We are presenting the Royal Shakespeare Company’s stage adaptation of The Wizard of Oz, which restores the dialogue and structure of the MGM film nearly scene for scene. It took almost fifty years for the stage to fully embrace the screenplay audiences know so well. This version includes the iconic lines, the ruby slippers, the balloon, and beloved musical moments such as “Over the Rainbow,” “Merry Old Land of Oz,” “If I Were King of the Forest,” and the exuberant “Jitterbug.” It honors the film while inviting the live theatrical imagination to complete the picture.

One of the great joys of this production is the participation of young performers from Salisbury Academy Overton Elementary School, Mt. Ulla Elementary School, and North Hills Christian School, who join us as Munchkins and citizens of Oz. Their presence reminds us that this story belongs to every generation. The openness and energy they bring to the stage infuse Oz with precisely the sense of possibility it requires.

Theatre allows us to experience transformation in real time. No matter how many times we return to this road, it remains powerful because it reflects something essential: courage grows through action, compassion through relationship, wisdom through experience, and home through belonging.

The ruby slippers endure because they symbolize belief set into motion. But . . . You still must click your heels. You still must choose.

Thank you for traveling the Yellow Brick Road with us. There truly is no place like home.
