Equipped for Life Outside College

Hometown: Wake Forest, North Carolina

Major: Environment and Sustainability

Minor: Information Systems

Graduation Year: 2023

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES:

I have recently retired from Track and Field, due to an injury, but I currently work at the Wellness Center Gym on Catawba College’s Campus. I was a part of SGA and the Alpha Orientation Leaders.

HOBBIES & INTERESTS:

I love to paint, read, and run leisurely. If I am not at school, I am at home playing with my 5 other siblings outside and having craft-time with them.

I made connections with staff and peers that will forever be significant to my life and a part of who I am as an individual.

Harmony Mason is a current senior at Catawba. She is an Environment and Sustainability major and an Information Systems minor. This year Harmony was also one of three youth panelists at the 2023 BREATHE Conference where she spoke about how youth are engaging in the environmental and climate justice movement.

She said, “My goal was to make the youth feel empowered to speak up and believe that they can make a difference in the issues prevalent today.”

“I wanted to share my thoughts on how we as a society could make more inclusive and equitable spaces for young people in climate leadership and activism, and to give examples on how Catawba College has already done that for me during my college career,” she added.

Harmony learned about Catawba through a pamphlet. “I learned about Catawba College in High School through a pamphlet that was advertising free applications to certain colleges that Catawba College was featured on. I was able to apply for free and went to visit the campus when I found out that I was accepted,” she said.

She fell in love with Catawba after touring its campus. “After touring the campus, I immediately fell in love with the brick buildings and welcoming faces. Everyone seemed so friendly, and it felt like arriving at a family reunion upon meeting staff and students. I realized how small the campus was after touring it and felt right at home. I really prioritized going to a school that would value each and every student as an individual and not just another number or object,” she said.

“After my four years at Catawba College, I can truly say that I have grown so much in not only my education, but mentally as well. I feel ready and equipped for life outside of college because of the staff and faculty that have been involved in my life. The professors here want to see you succeed and will do whatever is necessary to help you along the way if you ever struggle.”
