Licensure in Teacher Education

COURSE RECOMMENDATIONS for Community College Transfer Students

Seeking Teacher Education Licensure

NOTE:  Although students who complete the A.S. or A.A. degree and transfer to Catawba College meet general education requirements, they may not necessarily meet certain requirements for teacher licensure.  Below are courses that transfer students may include in their community college coursework that apply to the major or minor at Catawba College and also address licensure requirements.  While these courses are not required for transfer, taking these courses while enrolled at a community college may alleviate future scheduling conflicts.  It is not necessary to complete every course listed at the community college.

 

Elementary Education

  • PSY 241 or 243 = PSYCH 1340 Child Psychology or PSYCH 1500 Human Development
  • MAT 151 = MATH 1132 Introduction to Statistics (not required but STRONGLY RECOMMENDED)
  • HIS 131 or HIS 132 = HIST 1776 American History and Cultural Traditions
  • HIS 236 = HIST 1663 North Carolina History (not required but STRONGLY RECOMMENDED for NC teachers)
  • GEO 112 = EDUC 2105 Cultural Geography

 

Middle Grades Language Arts Specialization

  • PSY 241 or 246 = PSYCH 1350 Adolescent Psychology or PSYCH 1500 Human Development
  • ENG 131 - Introduction to Literature = ENGL 1114 Reading Literature
  • One to three ENG literature courses above 100 level selected from the following = 2000+ level English courses
    • ENG 231 - American Literature I
    • ENG 232 - American Literature II
    • ENG 241 - British Literature I 
    • ENG 242 - British Literature II
    • ENG 251 - Western World Literature I 
    • ENG 262 - World Literature II 


Middle Grades Mathematics Specialization

  • PSY 241 or 246 = PSYCH 1350 Adolescent Psychology or PSYCH 1500 Human Development
  • MAT 151 - Statistics I + MAT 151A - Statistics I Lab = MATH 1132 Introduction to Statistics

 

Middle Grades Science Specialization

  • PSY 241 or 246 = PSYCH 1350 Adolescent Psychology or PSYCH 1500 Human Development
  • The following courses are prerequisites for PHYS 2521 General Physics I
  • CHM 151 - General Chemistry I = CHEM 1501 General Chemistry I
  • CHM 152 - General Chemistry II = CHEM 1502 General Chemistry II

 

Middle Grades Social Studies Specialization

  • PSY 241 or 246 = PSYCH 1350 Adolescent Psychology or PSYCH 1500 Human Development
  • HIS 236 = HIST 1663 North Carolina History
  • HIS 111 = HIST 1492 Global History and Cultural Traditions OR HIS 112 = HIST 1492 Global History and Cultural Traditions
  • HIS 131 or HIS 132 = HIST 1776 American History and Cultural Traditions
  • GEO 112 = EDUC 2105 Cultural Geography
  • ECO 252 - Principles of Macroeconomics = ECON 1901 – Principles of Macroeconomics
  • POL 120 = POLS 1101 Introduction to American Politics
  • SOC 210 = SOC 1101 Introduction to Sociology

 

Secondary Education (9-12) Minor

  • PSY 241 or 246 = PSYCH 1350 Adolescent Psychology or PSYCH 1500 Human Development

Students seeking licensure in grade 9-12 subjects will major in the licensure areas of Biology, Chemistry, English (with literature concentration), Mathematics, or History and minor in Secondary Education.  Transfer students should contact the department chair of the specific area in which they seek licensure.

 

Special Subjects (K-12) Minor

  • PSY 241 or 243 = PSYCH 1340 Child Psychology or PSYCH 1500 Human Development
    OR
  • PSY 241 or 246 = PSYCH 1350 Adolescent Psychology or PSYCH 1500 Human Development

Students seeking licensure in grade K-12 subjects will major in the licensure areas of Music Education (concentration), Physical Education or Theatre Education and minor in Special Subjects.  Transfer students should contact the department chair of the specific area in which they seek licensure.
