CARE Team

Guided by Catawba’s commitment to Scholarship with Character and Culture for Service, the CARE Committee fosters a campus environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

When should CARE be provided?

These behaviors constitute a concern and may occur on or off-campus:

Threats of self-harm
Intimidating or abusive behavior
Irrational or impulsive behavior
Emotional or physical outbursts
Extreme or sudden changes in mood or behavior
Traumatic experiences (including sexual assault)
Surviving a crime
Basic needs (food, lodging, clothing)
Deterioration in personal hygiene or physical appearance
Financial Struggles (purchasing course material, etc.)
Losing a friend or family member
Excessive or uncharacteristic decline in coursework and course attendance

How to Help

When students recognize that someone cares, it can come as a huge relief.

Providing privacy to the student without any interruption is important to consider
Never minimize the problem or concern presented or try to advise and resolve quickly. come to resolve.
It is okay for the student to express their emotions in a manner that works for them. It provides them with an outlet after it has been bottled up
It is okay to ask the student if any resources or solutions were found to help with the problem.

Reassure the student that a decision to seek help or even accept help is a great choice.
Reassure them that they are not alone and that there is help.
Refer the student to a member of the CARE Team either via the CARE Reporting Form or another medium
It is okay to offer a meeting with the student to follow through.

Submit a CARE Report

Any member of the Catawba community can submit an online CARE Report if they are concerned about a student’s wellbeing.
Complete and submit the Student CARE Report (In case of emergency, please contact Public Safety at 704-637-4000).
The CARE Report will be reviewed by a team member Monday-Friday within 24-48 hours.
The CARE Team reviews the referral from the reporting database, gathers additional information, determines the level of concern and the intensity of the response needed.
A member of the CARE Team will either reach out directly to the student or facilitate a connection between the student and the appropriate campus resource, depending on the nature of the issue.
The student will be contacted and invited to engage in a supportive conversation to provide the best resources and establish a plan of action.
If ongoing support is required, additional resources and support are provided for the student.
If no additional concerns are presented during the conversation or outreach with the student and the issue is resolved, the CARE report is considered closed.
