The Real World Business Knowledge and Skills Needed for Today’s Music Industry

Catawba students who have chosen the Music Business concentration as the focus for their Music majors pursue “behind the scenes” careers in the music industry. After graduating from Catawba College, music business majors are prepared to become music managers, agents, producers, promoters, or label executives.

Prepare yourself to excel in the areas of the music industry that don’t happen on-stage. From marketing and event promotion to contract negotiation, sponsorship, and public relations, you’ll be equipped to enter the industry and handle all aspects of business on behalf of your client or employer.

Music majors who concentrate in Music Business take specialized business, marketing, and economics courses to develop acumen allowing them to excel in a competitive industry. Students learn alongside their classmates through Catawba’s innovative Artist Development Program (ADP) while also completing a professional internship centered on their specific interests in the concentration.

Program Highlights

  • Music Scholarships

    Prospective music students – music majors, minors, and ensemble participants – are encouraged to audition for music scholarship opportunities while auditioning for acceptance into the Catawba College Music Department.

  • Industry Internships

    Music students have completed concentration-related internships at Def Jam, Aware Records (best known as John Mayer’s recording label), Muzak/Mood Media, and other important organizations within the music industry.

  • Artist Development Program (ADP)

    Catawba College’s Artist Development Program gives students a glimpse into the world of the music industry. Program students come from different backgrounds but share a similar goal: perform or manage the talent on stage.

Being able to play music and work within the music business has truly been the best of both worlds and a dream come true! Catawba's music education was invaluable in helping me pursue my musical dreams after graduation.

Artist Development Program (ADP)

Catawba College’s Artist Development Program, or ADP, was created in 2010 by Catawba College Music Business major Chris Lunetta. Its objective is to give Catawba's incredibly talented students a glimpse into the world of the music industry. Music students who participate in the program come from different backgrounds but share a similar goal: perform or manage the talent on the big stage.
