Healthy Rowan and Catawba College Take a Hike

In support of Healthy Rowan’s Rowan Moves and Catawba College’s Exercise is Medicine On-Campus (EIM-OC) initiatives, Catawba College hosted a Healthy Rowan “Choose Your Own Adventure” Monday Mile Nature Walk on Monday, April 17th, 2023 in Catawba's beautiful Fred Stanback Jr. Ecological Preserve.

The event was organized by Catawba College’s Director of Wellness and Intramural Sports Ms. Emily Schneider, Healthy Rowan’s Program Manager Ms. Kristen Estepp, Exercise Science Assistant Professor, Dr. Ryan Fairall, and our very own personal tour guide, Mr. Joshua Cool, Catawba’s Ecological Preserve Keeper.

Nature Walk participants

The event had over 25 participants and was a great way for the participants to learn more about Catawba College’s Fred Stanback Jr. Ecological Preserve from Mr. Joshua Cool, as well as get in a good amount of steps, as the walk was approximately two miles long. Healthy Rowan’s Rowan Moves and Catawba College’s Exercise is Medicine On-Campus (EIM-OC) initiatives were both developed with the similar goal of getting the community members of Rowan County and Catawba College up and moving to improve health and wellness, as well as prevent and combat health-related conditions associated with a sedentary lifestyle, such as obesity, heart disease, stroke, type II diabetes, metabolic syndrome, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and some types of cancer.
